Step-by-Step Summary

  1. Remove Cassette: Use chain whip and lockring tool to remove the cassette.
  2. Remove Axle/End Caps: Pull or unscrew end caps to slide the freehub body off the axle.
  3. Clean Internals: Carefully wipe away old, dirty grease from the pawls and the ratchet ring inside the hub shell.
  4. Inspect Pawls: Check that spring-loaded pawls pop up efficiently. Check for chipped teeth.
  5. Lubricate: Apply a LIGHT coating of specific freehub grease. Thick grease will cause pawls to stick and slip, which is dangerous.
  6. Reassemble: Twist the freehub body counter-clockwise while pushing it back into the hub shell to depress the pawls.
  7. Reinstall Caps: Press or screw end caps back on and reinstall cassette.

[!WARNING] Using thick bearing grease in a freehub is the most common mistake. It causes the pawls to stick down, resulting in loss of drive (pedaling air).
