Steps
- Shift to Small/Small: Shift into the smallest chainring and the smallest cog. This reduces tension on the chain, making it easier to work with.
- Remove Old Chain: Locate the master link and use master link pliers to squeeze it open. If the chain doesn't have a master link, use your chain breaker tool to push a pin out. Carefully pull the old chain through the derailleur.
- Measure New Chain: Lay the old chain and new chain side-by-side on a flat surface. Trim the new chain to match the length of the old one using your chain breaker tool.
- ⚠️Note: If your old chain was sagging or skipping, consult a guide for "sizing a chain from scratch" to ensure the length is correct.
- Route New Chain: Thread the new chain through the front derailleur (if applicable), over the cassette, and through the rear derailleur pulleys. Ensure it doesn't rub against the derailleur tabs.
- Install Master Link: Connect the two ends of the chain using the master link. Ensure the link is properly seated in the chain rollers.
- Lock the Link: Use master link pliers to pull the link apart until it clicks into place. Alternatively, rotate the chain so the master link is on Top and apply pressure to the pedals while holding the rear wheel.
- Check Shifting: Run through the gears to ensure everything is smooth. Apply a light coating of lubricant if the factory grease feels too sticky.
Tips
- Always check that your new chain matches the "speed" of your drivetrain (e.g., use an 11-speed chain for an 11-speed cassette).
- Directional chains: Some chains (like many Shimano models) are directional. Look for logos on the outer plates; these usually face away from the bike.
- Don't toss that old chain yet! It makes a great "chain whip" tool for removing cassettes down the road.
