Step-by-Step Summary
- Clean: Clean the top cap area thoroughly. Dirt falling inside is catastrophic.
- Release Air: Attach shock pump and SLOWLY release all air pressure. Compress fork slightly to ensure negative chamber is empty too.
- Open Cap: Unscrew the air-side top cap (Fork) or unscrew the air can (Shock).
- Add/Remove Spacer: Snap the plastic volume tokens onto the bottom of the top cap. Harder bottom out = Add spacer. Full travel too easy = Add spacer. Never getting full travel = Remove spacer.
- Reinstall: Grease o-rings lightly and thread cap back in. Torque gently (usually aluminum threads!).
- Inflate: Pump back to desired pressure. Cycle suspension every 20psi to equalize chambers.
[!TIP] This is the best way to tune a bike that dives too much under braking or bottoms out on jumps, without making it feel harsh on small bumps.
