Step-by-Step Summary

  1. Identify Sides: Pedals are side-specific. "R" is Right (Drive-side), "L" is Left (Non-drive side).
  2. Removal Rule: "Back off." To loosen EITHER pedal, turn the wrench toward the BACK of the bike (while wrench is top-side).
    • Right pedal: Counter-clockwise to loosen.
    • Left pedal: Clockwise to loosen (Reverse threaded!).
  3. Clean Threads: Wipe crank arm threads clean.
  4. Grease Threads: Apply generic grease to the new pedal threads. This prevents them from seizing forever.
  5. Install Right: Turn Clockwise (normal thread). Tighten firmly.
  6. Install Left: Turn Counter-Clockwise (reverse thread). Tighten firmly.

[!TIP] If a pedal is stuck, mechanical advantage is key. Position the crank and wrench so you can push DOWN with your weight, rather than pulling up with your back.
