Inspection Interval: Monthly (or before long rides) Service Interval: Replace at 2,000mi / 1 year (or when worn)
Steps
- Clean the Tires: Wipe off any mud or road grime so you can clearly see the rubber surface.
- Check Tread Wear:
- Road: Look for a flattened profile in the center or "wear indicators" (small dimples). If the dimples are gone, replace.
- MTB/Gravel: Check for rounded or missing knobs, or exposed casing threads between knobs.
- Inspect Sidewalls: Look for deep cuts, fraying threads, or "dry rot" (fine cracking in the rubber). Cracks mean the rubber is aging and brittle—replace immediately.
- Search for Debris: Slowly spin the wheel and look for embedded glass, thorns, or sharp rocks. Gently pick them out. If they reached the tube (or if sealant bubbles out), you may need a repair.
- Check Bead Seating: Ensure the tire bead is evenly seated around the rim (no wobbles or bulges).
- E-Bike Note: E-bikes wear rear tires significantly faster due to weight and torque. Check your rear tire twice as often.
Tips
- Tire rubber degrades over time even if not ridden. Tires older than 3-4 years should likely be replaced due to hardening.
- If you can see the fabric casing threads through the rubber anywhere, do not ride—replace immediately.
