Step-by-Step Summary

  1. Remove Shock: Unbolt one end of the rear shock. This releases the tension on the linkage.
  2. Cycle Swingarm: Lift the rear wheel up and down through its travel. It should feel strictly smooth.
  3. Feel for Grit: If you feel "notchiness", resistance, or grit, a bearing is seized or pitted.
  4. Wiggle Test: Grab the rear wheel and wiggle side-to-side. Play indicates loose pivot bolts or worn bearings.
  5. Bolt Check: Go through every pivot bolt and check torque to manufacturer spec.
  6. Reinstall Shock: Re-mount shock and torque hardware.

[!NOTE] Often a "creak" is just a loose pivot bolt or a dry dust wiper. Don't assume bearings are dead immediately, but if the cycle feel is gritty, they must be replaced by a shop/bearing press.
