Step-by-Step Summary

  1. Loosen caliper bolts: Loosen the two bolts mounting the caliper to the frame/fork just enough so the caliper can wiggle.
  2. Set static pad: Adjust the minimal/static pad (usually the inner one) so it protrudes slightly but doesn't touch the rotor.
  3. Actuate brake: Squeeze the brake lever firmly and hold it. This centers the caliper over the rotor.
  4. Tighten bolts: While holding the lever, tighten the caliper mounting bolts evenly.
  5. Release and checking: Release the lever and spin the wheel. Listen for rubbing.
  6. Fine tune: If rubbing occurs, sight through the caliper and make small adjustments to the pad position dials or slightly loosen bolts to align by hand.
  7. Adjust cable tension: Remove slack from the cable at the anchor arm to ensure immediate bite when pulling the lever.

[!NOTE] Unlike hydraulic brakes, mechanical pads do not self-adjust for wear. You must manually dial them in as they wear down.
