The ABC Quick Check

The most effective way to prevent mechanical issues is to perform this simple 30-second inspection before every single ride.

A

Air

Check your tire pressure.

  • Squeeze test: Squeeze the tires with your thumb. They should feel firm, not squishy.
  • Inflation: Look at the sidewall of your tire for the recommended PSI range.
  • Condition: Quickly visually scan for cracks, glass, or thorns embedded in the tread.
B

Brakes

Ensure your brakes engage properly.

  • Lever feel: Squeeze the brake levers. They should engage firmly before touching the handlebar.
  • Pad contact: visual check that pads are hitting the rim or rotor, not the tire or spokes.
  • Quick Releases: Check that your wheel quick-release levers (or thru-axles) are closed and tight.
C

Chain & Cranks

Inspect the drivetrain.

  • Lubrication: If the chain looks dry or rusty, apply lube. Wipe off excess.
  • Gunk: If the chain is covered in thick black sludge, wipe it down with a rag.
  • Cranks: Give the crank arms a tug to ensure they aren't loose.

What about "Drop"?

Some riders add "D" for "Drop" (dropping the bike gently to listen for loose rattles). While useful, we focus on the core mechanical safety of Air, Brakes, and Chain for the absolute essentials.
